CommunitySmith is Breathing New Life into Clayton's Former Town Hall
CommunitySmith is proud to have entered into a public-private partnership with the Town of Clayton to redevelop this Clayton landmark! The purpose of this project is to transform the old town hall, which has fallen into disrepair over the years, into 16 market-rate apartments. These apartments will appeal to active professional clientele, driving more growth to downtown Clayton's economy. CommunitySmith values the cultural significance the Town Hall has for the residents of Clayton, so it strives to change nothing about the exterior of the building, with the exception of minor adjustments to improve aesthetics and infrastructure of the building.
A RICH HISTORY
The original town hall opened in 1925 and served as an all-in-one municipal building. Inside, the building housed the fire station, police station, council chamber, town staff offices, and a jail on the top floor. It only stopped serving the Town of Clayton in 2002-2003, and is a fond reminder of days gone by for many residents. CommunitySmith is dedicated to preserving the sacred monuments and historical sites of the communities we work in and as such is working tirelessly to preserve as much of the original structure as possible, while designing the apartments in a way that is true to the building's unique feel. In fact, the original windows of the complex will receive a full restoration in Greensboro, and then be shipped back to be reinstalled, keeping even more of the original building intact. CommunitySmith is giving the town hall, once a beacon of community spirit and life, a second chance to serve in that role once more.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There are expected to be 16 apartments of varying square footages, floor plans, and styles. These apartments will be studios and single-bedroom apartments, perfect for active professionals, those in the middle of a living transition, or others imply seeking to be in the heart of Downtown Clayton. The apartments themselves will feature exposed brick where possible, refinished hardwood floors and wood trim, sealed concrete flooring, high ceilings, and the most current appliances and modern amenities. Each apartment will be constructed in a way that is as green as possible–residents will save money on utilities and help preserve our most precious resources. These apartment homes will be the perfect blend of past and present, all while keeping the industrial yet rustic feel that these historic buildings are known for. Residents will be allocated one parking space per unit, all through an agreement arranged between the town and CommunitySmith. These apartments are perfect for those wishing to have close proximity to the bars, restaurants, and shops of Downtown Clayton–without having to get in the car. It will bring more of a live/play atmosphere to Clayton, something the town has been working hard to cultivate over the past few years.
A SPECIAL THANKS
CommunitySmith extends their gratitude to the Town of Clayton staff and leadership. Without their help and creativity, a project of this nature would never have been possible. As with other projects positively affecting the heart of downtown, they offered incentives and rebates to incentivize the significant investment in this challenging project, thereby boosting their local economy and driving business to the area. The Town of Clayton is lucky to have them.
